The drugs commonly used to treat post operative pain belong to three major groups: Opioids or NSAIDs or Acetaminophen. All of them have significant drawbacks associated with their use. Apart from the obvious concerns about drug dependence, tolerance and more importantly drug diversion, opioids have significant side effects which require additional medications and also delay the discharge of the patient from the hospital, contributing to significant increase in health care costs.
